Caesarean delivery and the attendant FETO-maternal aftermath at a rural hospital in South Southern Nigeria

Background: Caesarean delivery is a necessary tool in the management of obstetric patients when indicated. However, there general apprehension about increasing proportion births by caesarean section (CS) across globe. Objectives: To ascertain CS rate (CSR), indications and outcomes hospital. Methodology: The theatre records all deliveries at Federal Medical Centre Yenagoa, Otuoke outreach, South-South Nigeria, between January 2017 December 2021 were assessed retrospectively. Generated data analyzed using SPSS version 23. Results:There 770 deliveries, out which 104 giving CSR 13.5%. majority, 71 (68.3%) had emergency while 33 (31.7%) an elective delivery. commonest indication for was cephalopelvic disproportion (CPD) (27.9%) followed previous breech primigravida (17.3% 7.7% respectively). majority patients, 58 (55.8%) booked 46 (44.2%) unbooked. morbidity encountered anaemia complicated 21.1% cases. There one maternal death six perinatal deaths mortality rates 960/100,000 49/1000 respectively. Conclusion: within limits laid down World Health Organization. CPD chief repeat primigravida. Efforts to maintain rate, acceptable limits, as noted this study, should be continued.
